Are You A Friend Of God?

The Oxford dictionary defines a friend as a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically one exclusive of sexual or family relations, while the Cambridge dictionary defines a friend as a person who you know well and someone who you like a lot, but who is usually not a member of your family.

Who do you call a friend?  Abraham was called God’s friend in the Bible (Isaiah 41:8) and the reason for that can be found in James 2:23 which says ” And the scripture was fulfilled with saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the friend of God.

In the Bible most Men of God were called servants and not friends as in the case of Job and Moses. In Job 2:3,it says that, “And the Lord said unto Satan, hast though considered my servant job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?  And still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movest me against him, to destroy him without cause.

Moses was also referred to a servant of the Lord in Joshua 1:1-2,” Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead”.

As special as David was to God, he was not called a friend of God but as the man after God’s heart.  Act 13:22 says ” I have found David the son of Jesse a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will”.

What kind of a FRIEND are you? A friend can be classified as someone who never complains, never hates, and accepts you with all your faults.  When you are down your friend should be there to help you up. When life hits you hard and you feel like giving up, your friend should be there next to you saying you cannot give up now. When you feel like crying, your friend should be there to wipe away your tears. One American artist one sang “Take me as I am” meaning you should accept your friends the way they are and they should accept you the way you are. You should not try to change your friends even if you disapprove with their principles and practices but you can try and help them in prayer and let God change them for better.

Are you a true friend or just making friends just to increase the number of people you know? There is saying that goes “show me your friend and I will tell you who are you.” This means we should we should only keep good friends.  Friendship is not about what you can gain or achieve but it is about caring for each other.  Every religion teaches its followers to be good to his/her neighbours irrespective of their beliefs.  The best and most important rule for all Christians is to love one another so that we can be seen as true friends. We should follow the example that Jesus laid that we should “love the Lord thy God and thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself. ( Mark 12:30-31). The general principle that was demonstrated in this passage is that in order to be a true friend is to show love to those around you.

My conclusion is that true friends are hard to find as disobedience and hatred are now the order of the day in the modern society.  The world needs friends that are true in every sense of what friendship really means. Most importantly Christians should be true to one another and not betray each other. By so doing we would impact the world positively and God may even one day refer to us as His friends.

May God bless us all. Amen.
