If We Are Cautious Of This, Then We Have Peace

Utterance simply means: a spoken word, statement or vocal sound.

I’m sure you will be surprised on hearing that everyone born into the world has the power of utterance. This is so because we all came with a tongue and in the tongue lies a great power. The power in the tongue can make or mar ( Proverbs 18:21). The tongue is that little part of the body that is so powerful. The tongue is described as a fire (James 3:5&6). The tongue represents our ability to speak.

Like fire, our speech has the potential for causing a great harm. As a matter of fact, so many people have used their power of utterance to cause more harm than good.

In this tongue lies deceit, Ill speaking, evil, vain and unruly words, curses, backbiting, slander etc. It is also this same tongue that carries blessings and prayers. (James 3:9-11). So many people have used their power of utterance to kill (2 Kings 2:24), some have deceived with it. We should be careful with our use of words. A woman once abused her husband in the heat of an argument, she compared her husband’s mouth to that of a cat, and whenever the man sets his eyes on a cat, he I’ll always have a reason to beat her, what a life!!!

A simple “please” can open doors of opportunities, a simple “sorry” can end the quarrel of 10 years and ‘ thank you” can cause you to receive more. Some marriages have crashed due to the careless use of the tongue, how will a man tell his wife that he cursed the day he met her just because of a little misunderstanding, the wife will surely carry the wound of that careless talk for many years. Nabal was described as a churlish and ill-behaved man  and he proved it by using his tongue rudely which almost led to the destruction of his household, Abigail ( his wife ) a woman of good understanding used her power of utterance to save her entire household from destruction (1 Samuel 25:10,23-24).

Hannah used her power of utterance to get Samuel ( 1 Samuel 1 :10-11), Isaac did the same in the place of prayer for his wife ( Genesis 25:21). Our Saviour Jesus Christ used the same power of utterance to overcome the tempter ( Matthew 4:3-11). Psalm 46: 6 shows how powerful utterances can be. Who says positive things cannot come out of your mouth, when some people are sick, instead of them to declare healing with their mouth they will rather prefer to say it is that sickness that will kill them. Why?

Now sit back, ponder on how you have used you power of utterance, think about the people you have hurt with your words and say sorry today. Start using that power positively, and let the word of God be your guide ( Psalm 119:105).  Remember that we will all face judgement concerning the use of that power that lies in our tongue.

Matthew 15:11, James 3:5-12
